Where does your old furniture actually go?

Most people assume a cleared house goes straight to landfill. Done properly, very little of it does — but only if the load is separated before it reaches the transfer station.
Reuse comes first
Sofas with intact fire labels, dining sets, wardrobes and working white goods are worth far more rehomed than tipped. Local reuse networks and charities across Birmingham take these regularly, which is better for the household and reduces disposal weight for us.
Then recycling streams
What cannot be reused is broken down. Timber goes to chipboard manufacture, metal to scrap, textiles and foam to recovery, and electricals through the WEEE chain because fridges and freezers contain regulated gases that must be extracted before crushing. Mattresses are separated for spring and foam recovery rather than being buried whole.
- Wood — chipped and reprocessed

Ask for the licence
Under the UK duty of care, you are responsible for where your waste ends up. Always ask for a waste carrier registration number and keep the booking confirmation as your record. Anyone unwilling to give it is not the right firm.
