Sofa, mattress and white goods removal: the rules that catch people out

Single bulky items are the most common call we get, and the most commonly mispriced. Sofas, mattresses and fridges each carry their own disposal rules, which is why a two-seater is not the same job as two bin bags.
Why these items cost more to dispose of
Upholstered furniture is charged at a premium at transfer stations because of the foam and fire-retardant treatment. Mattresses are dismantled rather than crushed. Fridges and freezers must be degassed by a licensed operator before anything else happens to them. None of that is optional, and it is where the disposal element of the price comes from.

Getting it out of the house
Most collection charges hide the real work: getting a corner sofa down a turn in the stairs. We bring two people as standard, remove doors where needed and protect the walls. If an item was built in the room, tell us in advance and we will bring tools to break it down.
Reuse before disposal
A sofa with an intact fire label or a working washing machine is worth rehoming. We offer these to local reuse networks first — it is better for the household, better for the tip weight, and often the reason a quote comes in lower than expected.
